Revolutionizing Nutrition Security: Colorado’s Innovative SNAP Incentive Program to Boost Fruit and Vegetable Consumption

Colorado has acquired a $7.9 million grant to reform the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) with the innovative eHIP pilot program set to launch in April 2024. The program is designed to encourage SNAP households to buy more fruits and vegetables by making them more affordable. It revolutionizes access to healthy foods by loading incentive dollars directly onto recipients' Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. A distinguishing feature of the program is the 100% reimbursement for spending on qualifying fruits and vegetables, up to a monthly household cap of $60, making healthy eating more feasible and extending the food budgets of SNAP households. This transformational strategy aims to enhance nutrition security, promoting healthier and more equitable food environments.
