The study found that older adults who frequently engage in strenuous activities have brain activation patterns resembling younger individuals, especially when challenged with complex cognitive tasks. This suggests the significant role physical fitness plays in maintaining neurological health. So-called "high-fit" older adults, those leading active lives, showed brain activation primarily in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, similar to younger people. They also showed activation in the superior parietal lobe, indicating that physical fitness could help compensate for cognitive decline and maintain performance in cognitive tasks. This link positions physical fitness as an essential aspect of ensuring cognitive health as we live longer.
