Cancer, often referred to as the 'Silent Killer', recorded an alarming 10 million deaths globally in 2020. Despite being potentially preventable and curable, this global health crisis, characterized by unusual cell growth and possible metastasis, continues to strain global health systems. Cancer’s global impact is significant, with it being a leading cause of death worldwide. The most common types – breast, lung, colorectal and prostate cancers each pose unique treatment challenges. Collectively, lifestyle choices and environmental factors make up about one-third of cancer deaths while infections like HPV and hepatitis account for about 30% of cancer cases in low and lower-middle-income countries. Early detection coupled with effective treatment protocols can potentially cure many types of cancer. Treatment varies from surgery to palliative care, each tailored to individual patient needs. However, access to treatments is unequal globally. Emphasis on early detection, prevention, effective treatments backed by ongoing global research could steer us towards a cancer-free future. This requires global cooperation and increased initiative to bridge the treatment access gap.
